Designing an art installation for Hawarden Estate Experience

The process

Set across 1,962 sq m, we designed an interactive installation to encourage visitors to explore light and shadow. Visitors weaved through the grid of 16 wood-stained markers to measure the shadows cast at different times of the day, highlighting how light changes throughout the year. After sunset, spotlights illuminate the space, casting intricate patterns that offer a fresh perspective on the theme.

The installation's construction prioritised sustainability where possible, using durable, off-the-shelf wood stains and fibre panels made from UK-grown hemp for lettering and numbers as an alternative to acrylic. Even the posts used to install the markers were considered, opting for ground spikes that leave no trace.

“Adam created something for us that is not only elegant (deceptively so) but also genuinely thought provoking. You need to look at it and then dive into it and try to figure it out. Take time and get involved: it will reveal itself and it’s great.”
